TCU honors Athletes of the Week
April 15, 2008
Hoelscher, a freshman starting pitcher for the TCU baseball team, was named Male Athlete of the Week after earning his third win of the season Saturday during a 12-1 win over UNLV. The 6-3 righthander, who had a no-hitter brewing until the seventh inning, pitched seven strong innings of one-run ball.
Hoelscher retired 16 straight Rebels at one point and finished with a career-high eight strikeouts. The lone run allowed on the afternoon was unearned. The strong effort from the mound helped the Frogs shut down a UNLV offense that entered the weekend with a .300 cumulative team batting average.
Tuohimaa was named Female Athlete of the Week after combining for a 6-0 record last weekend to help lead the No. 24 TCU women's tennis team to dominating victories over three ranked MWC opponents. The freshman's performance helped the Lady Frogs earn their second straight MWC regular season title.
A native of Helsinki, Finland, Tuohimaa posted three wins each in singles and doubles play while helping TCU down No. 38 BYU, No. 54 Utah and No. 55 New Mexico. She currently leads the team with an 18-4 singles record this spring.
Sophomore Tommy Killen claimed TCU Road Warrior of the Week honors following his school-record effort to lead the Frog track and field team at last weekend's John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla.
Killen crushed the previous program record while winning the men's discus with a career-best spin of 192-10, which marked an NCAA regional qualifying mark. The throw broke Jordan Reynold's previous school record of 190-8, set in 1990.
Killen's toss also was only one inch shy of the Olympic Trials standard and currently ranks 10th in the NCAA.
