FORT WORTH – TCU celebrated another outstanding year for Horned Frog athletics at the annual end-of-the-year student-athlete banquet Monday evening. Whitney Gipson, Sarah Scherer and Casey Pachall were named the Pop Boone Athletes of the Year.

Gipson put together one of the most successful indoor seasons of any TCU track and field athlete in school history as she won the long jump NCAA title at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Newark, Texas, native tied the NCAA all-time record in the event at the national meet.

Scherer won the individual smallbore NCAA title for the second time in her three-year career. Additionally, she finished third invididually in Air Rifle at the NCAA Championships. Scherer's efforts helped win TCU's second NCAA team title in the last three seasons.

Pachall set TCU single-season records for completions, completion percentage and passing yards, while helped leading the Frog football team to an 11-2 record. In TCU’s 36-35 win at Boise State, Pachall threw for 473 yards and five touchdowns on his way to National Player of the Week honors.

Gipson also took home the athletics department’s highest honor, the Chancellor’s Award. The award is presented to a student-athlete who displays exceptional talent in multiple areas and is only presented in years a candidate is deemed worthy.

In addition to winning the NCAA long jump individual crown, Gipson has volunteered her time in the Fort Worth area, including working at a retirement center and speaking with local elementary and high school students about capturing their dreams.

TCU also honored its students-athletes for their work on the field and in the classroom. Swimmer Jennifer Oster was the Dutch Meyer Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, while trackster Jack O’Brien was the male recipient.

Swimmer Ashley Bolin was given the William Koehler Academic Achievement Award, which is presented to a student-athlete who overcame unique obstacles during his or her TCU career. Bolin plans to attend medical school upon graduation.

Soccer’s Kelly Johnson earned the Hal Jay Community Spirit Athlete Award, given to the TCU student-athlete who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in the field of community service.

Freshman golfer Julien Brun took home the Breakout Student-Athlete Award. The Antibes, France, native has won three tournaments in his maiden year with the Frogs and is a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award, given to the nation’s top collegiate player.

The department also honored most valuable players from each sport and recognized those students who were named All-Americans. Those honorees are listed below.
