The scholarships are named in honor of the late Dr. Prentice Gautt, a former Big 12 Conference staff member. Since the inception of the league in 1996-97, the Big 12 provided 421 scholarships totaling over $3.1 million for postgraduate education. Criteria for the awards include a cumulative grade point average of 3.200 on a 4.000 scale, completion of athletics' eligibility and expectation to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years of graduation.

Grabowski was a four-time letterman and three-time All-American and received her degree in kinesiology. She earned All-America honorable mention honors in 2014-15, first-team honors in 2016-17 and second-team honors in 2017-18.

Davis was a fullback who earned first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2017 and received his degree in sociology. He earned the football program's Y. Q. McCammon Outstanding Squadman Award in 2015 and was a 2017 recipient of the G. Malcolm Louden Academic Achievement Award.
