FORT WORTH – Repping special pink uniforms for its annual Dig Pink match in support of breast cancer awareness, No. 11 TCU took care of business against Cincinnati, picking up a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (15-3, 5-1 Big 12) extended their home winning streak to 17 matches, dating back to last season. National Player of the Year candidates Evan Hendrix and Becca Kelley led the way, powering the TCU offense to victory. For the fourth time in her last five matches, Hendrix tallied 20-plus kills, finishing with 26 on the night. The sophomore also finished with 12 digs, marking her eighth straight double-double. Kelley went for 15 kills on an extremely efficient .419 clip.
TCU's middle blocker duo of Sarah Sylvester and Alexis Roberson also got in on the offense, combining for 14 kills on 25 swings (.560 hitting percentage). As a team, the Frogs hit .320 as setters Rosemary Archer and Ella Foti guided the offense.
An ace from freshman Samara Coleman set the tone for the match as TCU grabbed an early 6-2 lead from the jump. Cincinnati pulled even with the Frogs at seven and hung around until the media timeout, but an 8-1 run was the difference for TCU. Hendrix and Coleman each came alive, securing three kills each over the stretch. With a convincing lead, Kelley finished off the first set 25-21 with a pair of kills.
The Frogs ran away with the second set, never trailing. After scoring the first four points, the Bearcats needed a break. TCU didn't let the timeout slow down the momentum, building up its largest lead of the night at eight points on a Sylvester block at 15-7. Everything continued to go the Frogs' way as they cruised to a 25-19 set win.
Cincinnati came out with a different intensity in the third set. The Bearcats went up early and continued to hold off TCU's comeback attempts. A late 3-0 run cut the deficit to three points at 19-22, but Cincinnati hung on to extend the match and force a fourth set.
Both teams went back and forth, looking for separation in the fourth set. Three straight points for Cincinnati gave the Bearcats a 15-12 lead at the media timeout, but the Frogs answered with a 4-0 run of its own out of the break to retake the lead. Scoring in bursts, TCU managed to secure set-point with a five-point cushion and eventually close out the match with a 25-22 victory.
