State Farm DFW Duel - The Battle for the Iron Skillet

In August of 2007, State Farm signed on as the presenting partner of the DFW Duel - the Battle for the Iron Skillet. This rivarly series, featuring the TCU Horned Frogs and SMU Mustangs, is among the most storied in college sports. Located just 45 minutes (without a traffic jam) from one another, the two schools play for bragging rights and to defend the honor of their fine cities.

Here's a look at the rich history of the rivalry . . .

Football
During the post-World War II college football boom, the TCU and SMU student body created a traveling trophy called the Iron Skillet that was presented to the winner of the annual football game between the rivals.

The tradition eventually died, and the skillet was lost. In 1993, the tradition was revived as SMU defeated TCU, 21-15. The skillet is presented to the winning team after each game.

With a 21-7 Homecoming victory over SMU on Sept. 22, 2007, TCU returned the Iron Skillet to campus. The Horned Frogs' Gary Patterson improved to 5-1 as a head coach versus SMU.

TCU holds a 41-39-7 lead over SMU in a series that began with a 43-0 Frog win in Fort Worth in 1915. The Frogs had won six in a row (1999-2004), by a combined score of 202-36, before the Mustangs took a 21-10 decision in Dallas in 2005.

Other than the two seasons (1987-88) the Mustangs did not field a team, the 2006 campaign represented the first time TCU and SMU did not play since 1925.

Since the final year of the Southwest Conference in 1995, TCU is 8-3 versus SMU.

TCU has won six consecutive games over SMU in Fort Worth. The Mustangs' last victory at Amon G. Carter Stadium was a 21-15 decision in 1993. The Frogs are 24-17-5 versus SMU in Fort Worth and 17-22-2 in Dallas.

Men's Basketball
For almost nine decades, the competition between the TCU men's basketball program and SMU has been filled with a plethora of memorable moments that has helped fuel this rivalry into one of the most heated and highly-competitive games of the season.

Meeting once, twice, three times and even four times during a single season, the Frogs and Mustangs have created a heated tradition fueled over time. Beginning in the 1919 season, the rivalry has seen 183 games.

The Mustangs have recorded a 101-82 advantage over the Purple and White. While SMU had the Frogs' number in the early portions of the record books, TCU has a 12-5 advantage in the last decade.

While the rivalry has always been a heated one between the Frogs and Mustangs, the personalities of their respective head coaches has helped built their feud into what it has become today. From the legendary games of Jim Killingsworth versus Dave Bliss to the rivalry of Billy Tubbs against Mike Dement to the "Door Wars" of Neil Dougherty and Matt Doherty, ever game has been highly-contested and the excitement has always come right down to the very end.
