TCU Uses Team Effort in NCAA Qualifier Win
Feb. 23, 2014
FORT WORTH - The TCU Rifle team put together arguably its best performance of the year on Saturday, finishing one point shy of its best aggregate score of the season on its way to a 4,660-4,650 win over Air Force in the NCAA Qualifier match.
The qualifier is one of the four scores used by the NCAA to determine the eight teams that will compete for the National Championship. The other three scores come from regular season action. All three regular season match scores must come from different match locations.
"I am very proud with how the team performed in the Qualifier," head coach Karen Monez said. "They needed a solid team performance and they delivered with a good score at the most important competition of the regular season."
The senior class also celebrated its last home match with a pair of personal-bests. Catherine Green's 593 in air rifle matched her career high, while Jamie Dowd's 593 was a career-high. Green, who has also increased her aggregate score in each of the last four matches, set a season-high in that category with 1,160.
Meredith Carpentier was the Falcons' top shooter in each discipline, recording a 594 in air rifle and a 578 in smallbore. David Higgins and Tyler Rico both shot a 587 in air rifle and 577 in smallbore.
Monez is also holding hope that the outstanding effort all of the Horned Frogs gave was enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be determined by other schools across the country.
"Now we will have to wait to find out what the other schools fired to see if the team has qualified for nationals," Monez said.
Should the Horned Frogs get a bid to the NCAA Championships, they would compete in Murray, Ky., March 14-15. The first day is slated for smallbore action while the second is reserved for air rifle.
