Rifle Cruises to Win at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Another dominating performance by the TCU Rifle team saw them leave The Citadel with a victory. For the second straight week, the Horned Frogs turned in a score over 4,700 as they fired a 4,702 to pick up the win.

TCU improves to 2-0 on the season and runs its winning streak to 15 straight matches. The Frogs are undefeated in their last 33 regular season matches dating back to 2009.

TCU dominated its next closest opponent as Jacksonville State finished second at the invite after shooting a team score of 4,644. Columbus State fired a 4,530 to place third. The Citadel put two squads on the line. The Coed squad finished fourth after shooting a 4,511 and The Citadel Women shot a 4,237 to round out the standings.

Consistency was the key to victory for the Frogs as they shot a team aggregate score of 2,373 in air rifle and a 2,329 in smallbore. The trio of Sarah Scherer, Sarah Beard and Caitlin Morrissey finished 1-2-3 in both disciplines. Additionally, Megan Lee continued her strong start to the season, posting a pair of top-10 finishes. Catherine Green rounded out the counters for the squad.

Scherer set the standard in air rifle, shooting a 598. She was followed closely by Beard, who shot a 594, and Morrissey, who fired a season-high mark of 593. Lee posted a sixth-place finish in air after matching her personal best with a score of 588. Green finished eighth overall after firing a 586.

In smallbore, Scherer continued her dominance in the discipline as she shot a 589. Beard fired a 586 and Morrissey a 581 to complete the top three. Lee finished eighth after shooting a 573 and Green just missed the top-10 with an 11th place finish and a score of 570.

TCU had a number of other shooters perform in the match as it traveled 10 team members to the match. Hannah Black was the only shooter to fire in both disciplines as she shot a 587 in air rifle and a 556 in smallbore. Also competing in air rifle was Jaime Dowd (582), Allie Taschuk (582) and Kelly Bogart (580). Claudia Duksa fired a 568 in smallbore.

The Frogs will open up their home schedule in two weeks when they host Memphis on Oct. 20 at the TCU Rifle Range.
