Postseason Begins For No. 1 Rifle Team

FORT WORTH – The No. 1 ranked TCU women’s rifle team turns its sights to the postseason Saturday when it will host the NCAA Qualifier. Heading to Fort Worth to take part in the match will be No. 4 Air Force.

The qualifier is one of the four scores used by the NCAA to determine the eight teams that will compete for the National Championship. The other three scores come from regular season action. All three regular season match scores must come from different match locations. TCU is currently first in the NCAA with an average score of 4,726.67.

TCU has maintained the top spot in the rankings for the majority of the season. Along with West Virginia and Murray State, the Horned Frogs are averaging a team aggregate score over 4,700. TCU’s 4,713 season average is second behind the Mountaineers. The Frogs have surpassed the 4,700 plateau in 11 of 12 matches this season.

Entering Saturday’s contest, the Frogs are the country’s top air rifle team, averaging a team score of 2,375. It’s 2,338 season average in smallbore is second. Air Force sits fourth nationally with its season average of 4,686. In air rifle, the Falcons boast a 2,366 season average, while also shooting an average score of 2,319 in smallbore.

TCU boasts two of the nation’s top five aggregate score shooters. Mindy Miles’ season average of 1180 ranks fourth just ahead of her teammate, Rachel Garner’s 1,177 season average. Freshman Casey Lutz sits just outside the top 10 with a season average of 1,175.

Miles’ leads the field in air rifle with a 596.818 average. In smallbore, TCU has four of the top nine shooters in Ariana Grabowski (585), Lutz (583), Miles (583) and Garner (583).

Air Force is led by Ryan Jacobs and his 1,173 season average. He sits 12th in the NCAA while his teammate, Spencer Cap, sits 16th with a season average of 1,172.

Cap is ninth in the NCAA with a 593 air rifle season average, while Jacobs sits 17th in smallbore with a 581 average.
The match is slated to begin at 9 a.m. at the TCU Rifle Range.
