Horned Frogs Prepare For Olympic Trials
Feb. 24, 2012
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Six TCU rifle members will be taking part in the second leg of the 2012 Olympic Team Trials for Airgun in Port Clinton, Ohio, from Feb. 24-26. Sarah Scherer is currently tied for first after the first date of competition in December.
Sarah Beard, Mattie Brogdon, Claudia Duksa, Catherine Green, Caitlin Morrissey, and Scherer earned their right to the event for their strong performances both collegiately and nationally, which keyed the Horned Frogs to a 12-0 clip headed into the NCAA Championships and a 31-match regular season winning steak. TCU's most recent victory came Feb. 18 in a 4680-4600 decision against Air Force in Fort Worth for the NCAA Qualifier.
Scores from the upcoming weekend will be combined with those of the first round totals from December 2011 in Aniston, Ala. At the trial's end, on Sunday, Feb. 26, USA Shooting will nominate six shooters with two each from Men's 10m Air Rifle, Women's 10m Air Rifle, and Men's 10m Air Pistol.
Scherer and Emily Caruso currently sit deadlocked in the Women's 10m Air Rifle. The pair sits two points in front of 2008 Olympian Jamie Gray. Scherer, a Fort Worth native, led TCU in both air rifle and smallbore on the season, compiling scores of 597 and 587, respectively. She also fired a perfect score of 600 on Nov. 1 against Alaska-Fairbanks. Beard's 589 in smallbore and 587 in air rifle was good enough for second in each category. Morrissey was third in both sets.
Once the six Frogs return, they will rejoin their teammates in another trip to Ohio for the NCAA Championships March 9-10. Ohio State will be hosting the event at Converse Hall and French Field House. Smallbore will run the first day and air rifle the second.
