Rifle Opens Title Defense Friday
March 7, 2013
The two-day tournament begins Friday with the smallbore competition and wraps up Saturday with air rifle. The overall team champion will be determined by combining the smallbore and air rifle team total scores into one aggregate score for each institution.
TCU has had a tremendous amount of success in the National Championships the last six seasons. They reached the pinnacle in both 2010 and 2012 as they took home the team National Championship as well as the Air Rifle National Championship in both campaigns. They have notched two fifth-place finishes (2007 and 2009) and a pair of third place finishes in 2008 and 2011. Additionally, Sarah Scherer took home the individual smallbore national championship in 2010 and 2012.
The top eight teams in both the smallbore three-position and air rifle events were selected based on the average of the three highest regular-season aggregate scores with no more than one match at any given site. The average of the three highest scores was added to the aggregate scores from the designated qualifiers to determine the top eight teams.
The Horned Frogs will be joined by Air Force, Alaska-Fairbanks, Army, Jacksonville State, Kentucky, Nebraska and West Virginia.
TCU, the third-best scoring qualifier in the championships, will bid farewell to seniors Sarah Scherer, Sarah Sarah Beard, Caitlin Morrissey following the championships. Junior Catherine Green and freshman Megan Lee will also make the trip for the team competition. Freshman Hannah Black became the first individual to qualify for the championships since Celeste Green in 2006.
The senior trio headed to Columbus has lost just two collegiate matches in their career. Last November, TCU set a school-record aggregate score of 4,718 at Kentucky. The week prior at Ohio State, Sarah Scherer broke the NCAA aggregate record with a 1,195 (599 in air rifle and 596 smallbore).
Scherer has been the Horned Frogs' top performer on the year, leading the team in both air rifle (596.3) and smallbore (591.5). The 2012 London Olympian has also reached 598 three times in air rifle and has scored 599 once, while setting an NCAA smallbore record with a 597 in air rifle at UTEP on Feb. 2. Beard is second in each of the respective disciplines at 591.6 and 585.3. Morrissey currently ranks third in each discipline as well.
TCU is coming off a 4,682-4,634 win over Air Force on Feb. 16 in the NCAA Qualifier. The victory moved them to 10-0 on the season and extended the Horned Frogs' winning streak to 23 matches.
