April 18, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- TCU Rifle sophomore Catherine Green won both Air Rifle and Smallbore titles at the National Junior Olympic Rifle Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., this past weekend.
Green fired a personal best score the first day in both championships to take the lead in each event. The Air Rifle portion saw her shoot a 394 and 393 the first two days followed by a 99.6-point final round to take top honors. In smallbore, Green had a 10-point lead going into the top-eight final, courtesy of 583 and 575-point turnouts in the first two days. Her victories garnered her a spot on the National Junior Team.
Green is the first TCU rifle member to win the smallbore event at the National Junior Olympics, as well as the first Horned Frog to win both titles in the same year (Sarah Scherer was Air Rifle champion at the Junior Olympics in 2008 and 2010). She is the fourth TCU team member to be named to a National Rifle Team, joining Scherer, Sarah Beard and Erin Lorenzen.
Horned Frog signee Hannah Black earned bronze medal honors at the event as well with a 783-point performance. Sophomore Jaime Dowd also qualified for her first top-eight final, moving up from 11th on the first day with a 388 to fourth on the second with a personal-best 394.
