Rifle Team Members Compete In Multiple Events
June 13, 2012
FORT WORTH, Texas - Four members of the National Champion rifle team competed in various events over the past week. Sarah Beard, Sarah Scherer competed at the Olympic tryouts for smallbore, while also competing along with Catherine Green and Claudia Duksa at the USA Shooting National Championships.
Scherer and Beard's bid to head to London as part of the smallbore Olympic team fell just short as they finished third and fourth, respectively in the tryouts.
The three-day event saw Scherer jump out to a big lead after day one, firing a 590, just one point off the record. Heading into day two of the event, she held a miniscule 0.4 (689.7-689.3) lead over Jamie Gray. Beard was not to far behind after shooting a 686.3 on the first day of competition.
Scherer lost ground on day two as Amanda Furrer put together a strong outing to take control of the match. Beard kept pace with the competition, holding her ground in fourth place.
The back-and-forth battle between Scherer and Furrer continued into day three of the event as Scherer closed the gap with an outstanding round of 196 in the standing position, regaining the lead in the match. In the kneeling portion of the match, Furrer bested Scherer 196-192 setting up a pivotal finals round.
Scherer was unable to close the gap as she finished third with a four-day total of 1955.8, just 2.1 points behind Furrer and 0.1 points behind the second-place finisher, Gray. Beard placed fourth with a four-day total of 1,950 points. Beard was the only competitor to fire over 100 points in each of the three final rounds.
Also competing in the championships was Green who finished second in the Junior Smallbore Championship and 11th in the open championships. She fired a three-day score of 1726 points and backed it up with a 95.6 in the finals to take second in the junior portion. Duksa was 24th in the open and ninth in the junior championship.
As well as competing in the Olympic tryouts for smallbore, USA Shooting also held its National Championships.
Scherer took home her second career USA Shooting National Championship in air rifle after topping her nearest competitor, Gray, by 0.4 points (899.2-898.8). She paced the field in both of the qualification rounds, shooting a 398 in round one and a 399 in round two. She did just enough in the finals, shooting a 102.2 to hold of Gray for the crown.
Overall, it's her fifth career National Championship. Scherer has two NCAA smallbore championships, two with USA Shooting and one in air rifle as a Junior Olympian.
Beard finished sixth overall after rebounding from a first-day score of 387. She fired a 395 to earn a spot in the finals where she shot a 102.5 to finish with a score of 884.5.
Green put together a two-round total of 777 (388-389) then fired a 101.1 in the finals to finish third in the junior air rifle championship. She finished 12th in the open.
