Beard Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year
July 30, 2013
FORT WORTH - TCU rifle's Sarah Beard was one of 146 female student-athletes to be selected as 2013 Woman of the Year honorees by their athletics conferences and by independent schools. She is one of three rifle shooters to earn recognition from the NCAA.
In August, the Woman of the Year selection committee will select the top 10 honorees in each division from this pool to be recognized. In September, the selection committee will announce the top nine finalists (three from each division), and the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will vote from amongst those finalists to determine the 2013 Woman of the Year.
On Oct. 20 in Indianapolis, the NCAA will announce the 2013 Woman of the Year and will honor the top 30 nominees.
Since completing her final campaign for the rifle squad, Beard has been busy competing at the international level. Most recently she competed at the International Shooting Sport Federation event in Grenada, Spain on July 12. While in Grenada, Beard competed in the Women's 10m Air Rifle as well as the Women's 50m smallbore.
In air rifle, Beard shot in the second qualifying relay and finished sixth with a score of 415.5 (103.5, 102.6, 105.0, 104.4). The mark was 15th among all shooters.
In smallbore, she fired as part of the first elimination relay, finishing third with a score of 583 (194 kneeling, 197 prone, 192 standing). The mark was sixth overall between the two relays, earning her a spot in the qualification relay. In that relay, Beard fired a 580 (191 kneeling, 198 prone, 191 standing) to finish 16th overall.
Beard will begin training as a resident athlete at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in September.
