FORT WORTH, Texas – Freshman Ashley Bolin packed in three event wins Wednesday, leading the TCU women's swimming and diving team past North Texas by a score of 158-130. The Frogs commanded 10 of the 16 events on the day, including the 200-medley relay.
The women conclude the regular season with an 8-3-1 record, including a 4-3-1 clip against the Mountain West Conference.
“It was a big win for us,” TCU head coach Richard Sybesma said. “To finish the regular season with an 8-3-1 record is good in anybody’s book. That is a respectable year for this program.”
Bolin claimed her fourth 200-free medal of the year, swimming her fastest winning time of 1:52.22, before earning her fifth 100-free victory of 2008-09, pacing the field at 52.89. The Oshkosh, Wis., native outlasted teammate Cheryl Townsend in the 400-IM with a time of 4:30.75 and her 17th overall win of the season. The newcomer also anchored the Frogs’ lone relay win, rounding out the 200-medley relay along with Brittney Martinez, Ellie Bradley and Stephanie Futscher at 1:49.30.
Sophomore Maria Paula Alvarez ended her regular season with a pair of wins, clinching the 500-free (5:05.71) and 1000-free (10:15.47) for the fifth-straight meet. The Cali, Colombia product has yet to lose in either event this spring and hasn’t dropped in the 500-free since Oct. 30.
Other Frogs to record victories against the Mean Green include Martinez and Futscher. Martinez, a sophomore from Englewood, Colo., took her fourth-straight 100-back title at 58.36, while Futscher topped the pool in the 200-fly for the fourth-consecutive meet and fifth of the year at 2:05.00.
TCU also swept the breaststroke events, as senior Katie Rosen claimed the 200-breast (2:25.36) and Bradley registered her second 100-breast win (1:07.23), topping Rosen by .67.
The women's squad will now prepare for the MWC Championships, beginning on Feb. 25. The men will conclude their regular season at Incarnate Word this Saturday in San Antonio.
