AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Maddie Ibrahim set a new school record in the backstroke, and the women’s 400 medley relay team shattered the school record at the Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championship in Austin Thursday night.
The women’s 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Elise Forzley, junior Devin Newton, sophomore Micaela Roemer and freshman Claire Munster swiftly finished the race in a school-record time of 3:41.38. Their time topped TCU’s previous best by over three seconds (3:44.93, 2015). Newton also went on to take home fourth place in the 200-yard IM finals with an NCAA “B” cut time of 2:01.38.
Ibrahim, a native of Austin, led off the 400 medley “B” relay in a school-record 100 back time of 54.20. Her time eclipsed Lyndsie Gibson’s (2014) record of 54.80.
Senior Garrett Hills blazed to a 20.09 finish in the 50-yard freestyle. His time moved him to No. 3 on TCU’s all-time list, behind only Scott McCracken (19.97, 2008) and Corey Nix (20.00, 2013), earning him an eighth-place finish.
In the men’s 500-yard freestyle, Dayne Odendaal logged a seventh-place finish in the championship finals, clocking in at 4:27.55.
Sophomore Carlos Hunnicutt led the way for the men in the 200 IM as he placed fifth behind a time of 1:49.23, matching his time in the prelims. Junior Jakub Swierczynski followed in seventh place at 1:50.02.
Through Thursday, the men’s team is in third with 216 points, and the women’s team is in fifth place with 154.5 points.
