HOUSTON – TCU divers Katie Lybbert and Ricky Bradley began competition at the NCAA Zone ‘D’ Diving Championships Monday at the CRWC at the University of Houston. Lybbert just missed out on the 18-diver final on 3-meter with a 19th place finish with 278.50. Bradley finished 24th on 1-meter with a score of 241.35.

Lybbert, a senior, had an inconsistent first part of the competition, starting off with a 40.80 on her first dive, a forward 2 ½ somersault pike followed by a big 53.20 on a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck. She struggled on her third and most difficult dive of her list, scoring 39.15 on her reverse 1 ½ somersault 2 ½ twist free. She made a run right at the end to get into the top-18 with back-to-back 50 point dives. However, she finished 1.85 points behind the 18th-place competitor.

Bradley, a sophomore, had a tough day at the office with the elite competition combined with some below average divers pulling him down. He started out with a 31.20 on one of his toughest dives of his list, a forward 2 ½ somersault pike. After a 44.40 point second dive, Bradley posted back-to-back sub-40 point dives. He recovered to score over 45 points on his final two dives, but it was too late to get back into contention for another six dives.

Competition resumes tomorrow with Lybbert competing in the women’s 1-meter contest at 11 a.m. and Bradley taking part in the men’s 3-meter event at 5:30 p.m.
