Frogs Sweep Falcons In Home Opener

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU men’s and women’s swimming teams swept UT-Permian Basin on Saturday to begin the season. The men’s team won 116-81, while the women were victorious by a score of 114-77.

“I was really pleased with our team efforts in this first meet,” said head coach Richard Sybesma. “UTPB is a solid program, and I was pleased with how our team competed.”

The Horned Frogs placed first in 14 of the 26 events held at the TCU recreation center. The newest members of the swim team started strong in their first meet for TCU. Freshmen Tommy Thach, Catherine Maxey, Victoria Barczyk and Leo Sanchez all earned first-place finishes.

“We have some freshmen that really stepped up,” said Sybesma.

Senior Mikayla Winkler opened the meet with a first-place time of 1:54.69 in the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore Carlos Hunnicutt followed that up by claiming first in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:43.29.

Both 200-yard IM events were captured by TCU. Sophomore Devin Newton, the current 200 IM school record holder, led the women with a time of 2:08.00, while Thach recorded a final time of 1:52.58. Thach also claimed first in the 100-yard freestyle at 46.55.

Sophomore John Smith, a transfer from Western Kentucky, finished the 100-yard butterfly in a first-place 51.11. Maxey also finished atop the scoreboard as she earned first in the women’s 100 fly at 58.71.

The Horned Frogs claimed first in both 500-yard freestyle events. Barczyk led the women at 5:20.97, and Hunnicutt led the men with a time of 4:42.35. Freshman Rhorer Legendre and sophomore Connor Dobbs closely followed to round out the top three.

Sanchez, a native of El Paso, Texas, recorded a first-place time of 51.89 in the 100-yard backstroke. Hunnicutt swam the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.35, earning first place.
