Frogs Ground Falcons in Sunday Sweep

ANDREWS, Texas – The TCU men’s and women’s swimming teams swept UT-Permian Basin on Sunday at Mustang Natatorium in Andrews, Texas. The men’s squad won 118-83, while the women tallied a 106-78 victory over the Falcons.

The Frogs combined for 14 first-place times from 14 different individuals among the 24 events overall.

Freshman Ryan Whelan kicked off the scoring for the men, with a close win in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:48.37. 

The 200-yard IM events were captured by TCU, both by freshmen. Emily Gibson posted a time of 2:11.88, nearly 11 seconds faster than second place, and Carlos Hunnicutt recorded a mark of 1:56.01 en route to his victory.

The Frogs claimed the next eight events to grab the lead from the Falcons. In the 50-yard free, freshman Meagan Thompson picked up the win with a time of 25.52. Senior Thor Stenfjord edged out fellow senior Frog Josh Mangus in a photo finish, as the two were separated by only 0.04 seconds. Stenfjord and Mangus’ times were 21.93 and 21.97, respectively.

In the 100-yard fly, junior Maggie Burkhardt’s time of 59.97 earned her the win, while senior Adam Szilagyi picked up the victory with a time of 51.93. Szilagyi holds the Mustang Natatorium record in the event with a time of 51.78 set in 2012.

The women’s 100-yard free finish was separated by 0.3 seconds, with senior Ali Bleasdell (54.50) claiming the victory over junior Carley Stevens (54.80). Sophomore Garrett Hills won on the men’s side with a time of 48.17. 

Senior Mackenzie Schuler posted a victory in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:13.55. Freshman Connor Dobbs earned the win for the men’s squad with a mark of 4:48.13.

In the 100-yard back, freshman Devin Newton’s time of 59.55 earned her the win, while senior Cooper Robinson picked up the victory on the men’s side at 51.16. Robinson also holds the pool record in the 100-yard back set in 2012 with a time of 50.93.

Junior Michelle Garland rounded out the first-place finishes for the Frogs in the 100-yard breast with time of 1:08.31.

Up next for the Frogs is a road matchup with Kansas and North Dakota in Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m.
