Chappell went undefeated at the UCF Hidden Dual in Orlando, Fla., over the weekend, winning all four of his singles matches and all three of his doubles matches with partner Will Stein. Chappell opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of No. 80 Sven Lalic of Indiana and teamed up with Stein to defeat Lalic and Dimitrije Tasi, 6-5(6). The No. 39 Horned Frogs recorded seven wins on Friday over No. 48 Louisville, and Chappell rallied to defeat Debastian Stiefelmeyer, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Chappell and Stein earned their second doubles victory of 2014 with a 6-1 win over Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri. On Saturday, the Indianapolis native topped Matthew Gladestone of the host Golden Knights, 6-4, 6-3.
Chappell, a junior, concluded the four-day tournament with another doubles victory alongside Stein, as the pair dropped Rice's Tommy Bennett and David Warren, 6-4. He also rallied to defeat Sriker Alla, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The squad will next compete in the NCTC Collegiate Classic Jan. 17-19 in Indian Wells, Calif.
Connolly was also a key component in another TCU win in Florida. The swimming and diving team wrapped up a weeklong winter break trip to the Sunshine State with a 102-88 win over Manhattan. The sophomore from San Antonio paved the way for the Horned Frogs, taking the best scores in the 1-meter (286.20) and 3-meter boards (272.40).
The Horned Frogs will return to the water Saturday, hosting West Virginia at 1 p.m. at the Rec Center Natatorium. It is the home finale and will feature a pregame ceremony honoring the seniors.
