TCU Breaks Two School Records on Day One

AUSTIN, Texas - The TCU women's team broke the school record in the 200-yard medley relay, and freshman Radu Duican broke the 200 freestyle record as the Horned Frogs wrapped up the first of four days at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship in Austin.

The women's quartet of sophomore Maddie Ibrahim, junior Devin Newton, sophomore Micaela Roemer and freshman Claire Munster started the conference championships with a bang, hitting the wall in fourth place with a program-best time of 1:40.83.

The men followed their performance up with a notable time of their own in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Duican led off the relay, and put the Frogs in great position with a school record 200 free time of 1:37.59. TCU's previous best was set in 2014 by Anthony McMurry at 1:38.12.

Sophomore Tommy Thach, junior John Smith and sophomore Carlos Hunnicutt went on to add to a 6:37.06 finish, over four seconds faster than their seed time.

To round out Wednesday's short competition, junior Darian Nezami, junior Jakub Swierczynski, junior John Smith and senior Garrett Hills notched a third-place finish in the men's 200-yard medley relay at 1:28.80.

After day one, the men's team ranks fourth in team standings with 58 points, while the women are in third with 91 points.

The meet will kick back in gear at 10 a.m. Thursday morning with the preliminary rounds. Finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
