FORT WORTH – The TCU men’s swimming and diving team will have Luiz Azarias, Cooper Robinson and Adam Szilagyi competing at the American Short Course Championships Friday and Saturday at the Texas Swimming Center in Austin. The meet serves as a “Last Chance Meet” for men’s swimmers to post qualifying times for the NCAA Championships.
Robinson and Szilagyi will compete in the 100 back on Friday and the 200 back on Saturday. Azarias will be in the 200 fly on Saturday.
With the new system for selecting competitors to the NCAA Championships, the amount of individual entrants accepted per event will increase this season. The TCU coaching staff has projected that the individual invitations will extend to the top-33 nationally in each event.
Robinson, the 2013 Big 12 Champion in the men’s 200 back, goes into the weekend ranked 31st nationally with a time of 1:43.25. His top time was from the San Antonio Classic in December. In winning the conference championship, Robinson posted a 1:43.35. With the Ivy League Championships going on and other last chance meets around the country, Robinson is squarely on the bubble. Even a couple tenths of a second off his top time can move him in safely into the top-30. Robinson is currently ranked 75th nationally in the 100 back at 47.95.
Szilagyi, who finished fourth in the Big 12 in the 100 and 200 back, is ranked 40th nationally in the 100 back at a school record time of 47.20. The 33rd place time sits a 47.01 and a 46.96 is required to get into the top-30. He also ranks 51st in the nation in the 200 back at 1:43.87.
Azarias, the Big 12 silver medalist in the 200 fly, crushed the school record in the event with a time of 1:46.04 in the Big 12 final. That time ranks him 57th in the NCAA. Azarias has a lot of work to do as the 33rd-placed time nationally sits at 1:44.95 and a spot in the top-30 would require a 1:44.89.
