FORT WORTH - TCU's women's swimming and diving squad continues its season Friday and Saturday at the Rice Invitational. TCU will be joined by hosts Rice, Houston and Incarnate Word at the Rice Aquatics Center. Competition begins Friday at 4 p.m. with Saturday events beginning at 9 a.m.

"We are going to see how our depth and quality come through this weekend," head coach Richard Sybesma said. "We are going to be challenged by Rice and Houston and Incarnate Word has some good swimmers. It will be an interesting meet."

The meet at Rice presents some unique opportunities for the Horned Frogs women. The Owls' competition pool is a 50-meter outdoor facility. Though a bulkhead will be in place to bring the pool down to the NCAA-size 25-yard pool, the meet will still be outdoors. Sybesma does not want any possible poor conditions to be distraction to his team.

"Being outdoors will be unusual for our team," Sybesma noted. "Rice has an outdoor 50-meter pool so depending on the weather it will be interesting. We are going to be focused on winning, not the weather. I have told the team it is about winning in the water."

Another unique aspect to this weekend's meet are the events. The schedule is an NCAA Championships schedule, meaning every event will be on the slate. This includes events such as the 400 IM, 1650 free and 800 free relay that teams usually do not first compete in until bigger invitational meets in November and December.

"We don't swim the 400 IM and the mile that often," Sybesma noted. "It is going to challenge our kids in a different way. They are going to have to step up so we can see where they are in their training and their season."

After a season-opening victory over UT-Permian Basin on Oct. 8, TCU is ready to be back into competition. With four swimmers scoring for each team in each event, the meet will be a good early-season test for the Horned Frogs women.

"I am excited about it," Sybesma concluded. "If this was a one-day meet we could not do all the events. It will spread us out to see how good we are."
