FORT WORTH - TCU swimmers Edgar Crespo and Maria Paula Alvarez are TCU's Athletes of the Week, it wan announced today.
Both competed against numerous Olympians over the weekend at the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Crespo posted the Mountain West Conference's second-fastest time in the 200-breaststroke on Saturday. His 2:00.76 in the finals was his fastest time of the year in the event by nearly four seconds.
The Panama City, Panama, native also nabbed a spot in the 100-breaststroke finals via his 16th-place finish and 54.56 in the preliminaries. In the finals, he finished 17th overall with a 54.63.
He was also a member of TCU's 200- and 400-medley relay teams that posted 10th- and 12th-place finishes, respectively. The 200-medley team clocked a 1:30.34 that is the fifth-fastest in TCU history and the third-fastest in the MWC for 2010. The 400-medley team's time of 3:19.02 is the fourth-best in school history and No. 3 on the MWC 2010 list.
Alvarez finished 49th overall in a highly-competitive 500-freestyle field. Her time of 4:56.88 is her second-fastest time of the season in the event. She also notched the fastest 200-freestyle time of her season with a 1:51.54 in the preliminaries.
As a member of TCU's relay teams, Alvarez also swam the second leg of the 800-freestyle relay. That team notched a 7:27.93 that is fourth-fastest time in school history and third-best in the MWC. Their time is also the 39th-fastest in the NCAA.
The Cali, Colombia, native was a part of TCU's 400-freestyle relay team that posted a 13th-place finish overall. Their time of 3:25.58 is third-best in the conference and 46th-best in the NCAA for 2010. In addition, it is No. 3 on TCU's all-time list.
