FORT WORTH – TCU’s swimming and diving teams return to the pool starting Saturday for the three-day Incarnate Word Invitational in San Antonio. The event will take place at The Aquatic Center at Palo Alto College. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. each day with finals starting at 5 p.m.

“Every time these kids compete they are giving us the chance to see who will be on our championship team February at the Big 12 Championships,” TCU head coach Richard Sybesma said. “This meet will tell us a lot about how our team competes and where everyone is in their training.”

Students at TCU will have finished up with finals week by the time competition begins. With the student-athletes focusing on finals it has allowed for the Horned Frogs to get a break in their training schedule.

TCU last competed at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships with the Horned Frogs posting 14 NCAA ‘B’ cuts over the three days of competition. The UIW Invite will feature all members of the TCU squads, giving many swimmers opportunities to show what they can do.

For the women, the staff will be interested in seeing its depth in the backstroke events, with junior Ali Polhill, sophomore Lizzy Oster and freshman Aly Davis all getting their chance to shine. Davis and Polhill will also be swimmers to watch in the 100 fly.

Mikayla Winkler competed at the Winter Nationals, but as a “relays only” swimmer. She will now have her chance to show her progress in the distance freestyle events. The coaches are also looking forward to seeing Maggie Burkhardt in the IM events.

On the men’s side freshman Corey Nix competed at the Winter Nationals as a “relays only” swimmer, and will now get a chance to show his individual sprint prowess. Fellow freshmen Ford Story in the breaststroke and Grayson Whitten in the butterfly will also get a chance to show what they can do.

The TCU divers will be back in competition for the first time in over a month. The TCU women last competed at Kansas, and the TCU men have not competed since the dual meet at SMU.

The Horned Frogs are the defending team champions of the UIW Invite in both the men’s and women’s divisions. The men will compete against the hosts Incarnate Word and Missouri State. The women will square off against North Texas and Rice to go with UIW and MSU.
