Brandal Lawrence set a school record in the triple jump on Saturday

Feb. 2, 2002

Eliud Njubi logged a provisional mark in the mile run and Brandal Lawrence established a school record in the triple jump, highlighting the TCU Flyin' Frogs performances on final day of the Third Annual Tyson Pre-National Indoor Classic, held in front of a meet record crowd of 4,386 at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Saturday.

Njubi, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in the 800 meters earlier this year, posted a time of 4:00.87 in the seeded heat of the mile run, just .17 seconds off an NCAA automatic time. The senior from Kenya finished fifth in the race, but was second among collegiate competitors.

Lawrence continued his excellent triple jumping this year, recording a school record leap of 15.97 meters (52-04.75), improving on his provisional mark of 15.69m set at the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock on January 26. The old school indoor record was 15.96m (52-04.50), set by Abdul Rasheed last March. Lawrence, a junior from Dallas (DeSoto High) finished sixth in the meet, but had the second longest jump for a collegian.

"We had a good meet," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "Njubi ran very well and Lawrence continues to get better. This was definitely a step in the right direction. If we keep making strides, we should be in good shape for the conference meet later this month."

The Frogs were well represented in the sprint finals. Demario Wesley placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.68. Michael Frater finished eighth with a mark of 6.79. Jermaine Joseph (21.35) and Steve Slowly (21.45) placed sixth and seventh respectively in the 200 meters. The mile relay team also put together its best performance of the season, missing a provisional mark by .43 seconds with a sixth-place finish of 3:10.83. On the women's side, Monica Twum turned in a second-place finish in the 60 with a time of 7.40. Chaunte Baldwin (7.57) and La' Toya White (7.59) placed seventh and eighth respectively.

On Friday, Cleavon Dillon posted an NCAA provisional mark of 7.62 meters (25-00.00) in the long jump.

The Frogs will be in action again next week when they travel to Houston to take part in the Houston Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday, February 8 and 9. TCU will take the following week off as they prepare for the Conference USA Indoor Championships, February 22-23 in Bloomington, Indiana.
