Frogs Fly in Last Chance Meet
March 2, 2002
The TCU Flyin' Frogs turned in an impressive performance at the Last Chance Meet here on Friday, with four season bests and NCAA provisional times recorded.
The highlight for the Frogs came in the 60-meter dash. Sophomore Michael Frater entered the meet with a season-best time of 6.72, an NCAA provisional mark, but one that placed him in a tie for 30th among NCAA qualifiers and most likely out of the national indoor meet. After posting a prelim time of 6.73, Frater clocked a semi-final heat-winning time of 6.69, then exploded in the finals with a personal-best mark of 6.64, just two one-hundreths of a second off an NCAA automatic qualifying time and among the top 10 times recorded in the nation this spring.
"I hope Michael remembers what he did this week so he can do it again next week," said an obviously pleased TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "He came up big after a disappointing performance at the conference meet last week."
Monica Twum made it a 60 sweep for TCU as she captured the women's short sprint in a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 7.33. Twum entered the meet with a season-best time of 7.40, which placed her 10th in the nation, then clocked a 7.38 in winning her heat of the semi-finals before turning on the jets in the finals.
The men's 4x400-meter relay also made a strong bid to reach the NCAA meet. The quartet of Kendall Pyant, Jason Morgan, Steve Slowly and Terrance McBryde posted a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 3:08.28, over two seconds faster than their previous best mark this spring. However, they placed just eighth in the talented field on Friday and will have to wait and see if the mark is fast enough to earn a spot in the national meet.
Distance runner Herbert Mwangi competed well in the 5000 meter run, taking second place with a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 14:14.2, an eight-second improvement over his previous best time this spring. He also will have to wait and see if the mark is good enough to race again next week at nationals.
The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be competed next Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9, on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. Other Frogs who did not compete this weekend but are expected to participate in the NCAA meet are Eliud Njubi (mile), Brandal Lawrence (triple jump) and Cleavon Dillon (long jump).
