Harris Improves 400 Mark at Last Chance Meet
March 8, 2003
TCU quartermiler Jerry Harris solidly put himself into contention for a shot at next week's national indoor meet with his performance at the Iowa State Last Chance Meet in Ames, Iowa on Saturday.
Harris, a junior from Alexandria, Virginia, turned in a season-best time of 46.34 seconds in the 400 meter dash on Saturday. That NCAA provisionally-qualifying mark was nine one-hundreths of a second better than his previous season best of 46.43, set at the Air Force Classic in Colorado Springs, Colorado on February 8 and just two one-hundreths of a second off an automatic NCAA mark. Johnny L. Collins II holds the school record of 46.26 seconds, set on the same track in Ames on March 5, 2000. Harris came into the Last Chance Meet with the nation's ninth fastest time.
None of the other four Frogs competing in last chance meets improved on their season-best marks. They will find out this week if their marks are good enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Jabari Fields and Jermaine Joseph competed in the 60 and 200 meter dashes respectively on Saturday in Ames, while Cleavon Dillon and Brandal Lawrence took part in the long jump and triple jump competitions respectively on Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The Frogs and the rest of the nation's elite track & field athletes will converge on Fayetteville, Arkansas next week for the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships. The competition will take place at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas beginning Friday, March 14.
