Frogs Fall Short in Final Day of NCAA Meet
March 9, 2002
The TCU Flyin' Frogs came up empty in the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held on the University of Arkansas campus today.
Senior middle distance runner Eliud Njubi placed ninth in the finals of the mile run with a time of 4:09.44, nearly nine seconds off his school record time set at last year's national meet, while junior Brandal Lawrence failed to reach the finals in the triple jump, placing 11th with a best skip of 15.45 meters (50-08.25), nearly two feet shy of his school record mark set earlier this spring.
"It was not a good day for us," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "Eliud has not been 100 percent over the last couple of weeks and has lost some fitness. He may have made his move a little early and was unable to hold his position. Brandal did the best that he could, but it was just not his day. Those things happen."
The Frogs finished the meet with five points, thanks to a fourth place finish by freshman Cleavon Dillon, who set a school record with a leap of 7.86 meters (25 feet, 9 1/2 inches) on Friday.
TCU begins its outdoor season next Saturday when they travel to Baton Rouge to take part in the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational. That is also the site of this year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
TCU Results (Saturday only):
Triple jump finals: 11. Brandal Lawrence 15.45m (50-08.25).
Mile run finals: 9. Eliud Njubi 4:09.44.
