TCU senior distance runner Herbert Mwangi took first place honors in the 5,000 meter run, highlighting Thursday's performance for the Horned Frogs in the 75th running of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.

Mwangi cross the finish line in a time of 14:20.96 to lead the 20-man field. He finished just ahead of Mark Menefee from the University of Kansas, who finished in 14:21.75. He becomes the second runner in TCU history to win the 5K at the Texas Relays, joining 1999 and 2000 winner David Lagat.

"Herbert ran a good, smart race," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "It was a conservative pace early. With about 1,000 meters to go, he made a push. Then with about a quarter of a mile to go, he picked it up another notch and outkicked the competition to the finish line. It helps us get the ball rolling for Friday's events," added Stratton.

Thursday's women's events also featured several TCU performances. Robin Schacht and Shannon McKinney competed in the 5,000 meters. Schacht placed 13th in a time of 17:34.84, while McKinney finished 19th with a time of 19:01.14. The women's 4x800 meter relay team finished in eighth place. The quartet of Justina Malone, Heather Hanchak, Perhona Tomlin and Cindy Dietrich turned in a time of 9:08.08. In late action on Wednesday, Katie Singleton finished 14th in the 10,000 meter run in a time of 40:02.82.

The meet continues on Friday with TCU athletes entered in heats of the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays, prelims of the 100 meter dash, the 100-meter low hurdles for women and the long jump for men.
