Smith Wins Discus at Florida Relays
April 4, 2014
Megan Smith tied her own school record in the women's discus with a throw of 181-00 Friday to win the event at the Florida Relays.
Smith, who set the new school record two weeks ago at the TCU Invitational by nearly 14 feet, tied mark on her third throw of the day Friday.
"She bounced back today and tied her PR," TCU track and field coach Darryl Anderson said. "The good thing is she's starting to show consistency and we are pleased about that. It's early in the season and she'll continue to get better."
Entering Friday's meet, her throw of 181-00 at TCU was the fifth-best in the country.
In the women's long jump, the two winners of four of the last five NCAA women's indoor and outdoor long jump championships went head-to-head Friday. Former Frog Whitney Gipson posted a jump of 21-01.50 to edge Lorraine Ugen, who had a jump of 20-10.
"Lorraine and Megan have been the face of our program and they came out and did a good job today," Anderson said.
The Florida Relays continue today at 9 a.m. CT with the field events while running events get underway at 11 a.m.
"We'll come out Saturday and run in the relays and we'll see if we can make some improvements," Anderson said.
