April 26, 2002
Cindy Dietrich broke her personal best mark in the 3,000 meter run by nearly nine seconds, highlighting TCU's efforts in a chilly first day of the 108th running of the Penn Relays held on Thursday.
Dietrich, a senior from Mulvane, Kansas, placed sixth in Thursday's event with a time of 9:47.94. Her previous best mark was 9:55.06, as she took 13th place at the 2001 Penn Relays. The school record is 9:35.54, set by Glady's Keitany at the 1999 Penn Relays.
In other action on Thursday, the heats of the women's sprint relays were held. TCU's 4x100 meter relay team finished second in their heat with a time of 46.04, while the women's 4x400 meter relay unit finished in a time of 3:47.19. Herbert Mwangi was the lone TCU men's runner to take the track on Thursday. He finished 22nd in the 10K with a time of 30:25.84.
"The weather was not conducive to good times, especially for the sprinters," said TCU Head Coach Monte Stratton. The girls in the 3,000 meters ran well. The relay teams struggled a little. Overall, it was not a bad first day. We hope the weather clears up and we have a good day on Friday."
