Philadelphia - The 111th running of the Penn Relays got underway Thursday at venerable Franklin Field in Philadelphia. The TCU women got things started today, while the men look forward to taking the track for the first time on Friday.

Both the women's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay squads advanced to the College Division finals. The 4x1 unit of Nathandra John, Deborah Jones, Jamee Jones and Kandis Bell turned in a time of 45.73 to place 11th in the heats. Their final is set for Friday. The 4x4 quartet of John, Jamee Jones, Donita Harmon and Deborah Jones ran a 3:43.75 to placed 10th in the prelims and advance to Saturday's finals. The top eight times advance to the "Championship of America" finals, while the next eight times will compete in the College Division finals.

"It wasn't exactly what we were looking for, but we'll get a chance to run again," said TCU head coach Darryl Anderson. "At least we get another chance to compete here and show what we are capable of doing. We'll see what the men can do tomorrow."

In other events on Thursday, junior Julie Curtis placed 21st in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 62.48 seconds. Freshman Halie Bullin finished 27th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:34.12. Sophomore Zelma Wade was 12th in the discus with a best throw of 43.84 meters or 143-10.

The Penn Relays continue through Saturday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
