Tracksters Compete at Last Chance Meet
May 19, 2002
Senior distance runner Herbert Mwangi took the gold medal in the 5,000 meter run in his final collegiate event to lead eight members of the TCU track and field squad at the Last Chance Meet, completed here on Saturday.
Mwangi turned in a winning time of 14:22.68, but fell about 15 seconds shy of turning in an NCAA provisional mark in the event. Mwangi was the Conference USA outdoor champion at both 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
None of the Frogs competing in the Last Chance Meet improved on their marks set during the outdoor season. The Frogs will find out this week which members with provisional marks will qualify for the NCAA meet, which will be held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, May 29-June 1.
Those Flyin' Frogs with automatic marks for the NCAA meet include sophomore sprinter and Conference USA Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year Michael Frater in both the 100 and 200, senior Steve Slowly in the 200, the long jump tandem of Cleavon Dillon and Aundre Edwards and the men's 4x100 meter relay team.
