May 24, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas - Whitney Gipson and Lorraine Ugen both punched their tickets to the final round of the NCAA Track and Field Championships Thursday to lead TCU on the opening day of the 2012 NCAA West Preliminary Round at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
"At the end of the day, we had some individuals do some good things today," said head coach Darryl Anderson. "I am pleased with how we ran in the 100 meters. We just have to come back tomorrow and advance on both sides. I thought Whitney Gipson and Lorraine Ugen did what they had to do today in the women's long jump. Overall, we will come back tomorrow and see what we can get done."
Gipson, a five-time All-America honoree and reining indoor National Champion, earned runner-up accolades in the women's long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 6 inches on her third attempt to automatically qualify for the 2012 NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Ugen, a freshman, followed in eighth-place, soaring 21 feet, 1 1/2 inches on her first attempt to advance to the final round, which will take place on June 6-9 at Drake Stadium. Overall, TCU was one of only four schools to qualify multiple student-athletes in the women's long jump to the final round of competition.
On the men's side, freshman Ramone Bailey just missed advancing to the final round, placing 14th overall out of 48 competitors with a seasonal and personal-best leap of 24 feet, 11 3/4 inches.
In the men's 100 meters, junior Charles Silmon led the Frogs, moving on to Friday's quarterfinal round by clocking a time of 10.31 seconds to finish first in heat No. 5 and sixth overall. On the women's side, Ugen and junior Chaniqua Corinealdi both advanced to Friday, posting times of 11.40 and 11.51 seconds, respectively. In all, Ugen crossed the finish line second in heat No. 1 with the ninth-fastest time overall, while Corinealdi qualified by finishing second in heat No. 4 with the 10th-fastest time.
TCU will continue action tomorrow in Austin at the 2012 NCAA West Preliminary Round. Competition is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. CT with the women's discus.
