Women's 4x1 Advances To NCAA Outdoor Finals
June 9, 2004
Austin, Texas - Rain wiped out most of the first day of competition at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, but not before the TCU women's 4x100 meter relay team advanced to the finals.
The TCU quartet of freshman Jamee Jones, sophomore Donita Harmon, senior Larissa Bakasa and freshman Virgil Hodge struggled with a couple of their handoffs and crossed the finish line in 44.51 seconds, well off their season best time of 44.05, to finish fourth in the second heat behind Texas, Miami (Fla.) and Stanford. With only the top two teams from each heat automatically advancing to the finals, the Frogs had to wait until the third and final preliminary heat was completed to see if they would run again this season. When UCLA finished third with a 44.51 clocking tying TCU for the ninth and final qualifying position, the Frogs had to wait a little longer to see if they would advance. When the finals results came in, it was good news for TCU. The Frogs posted an official time of 44.503 seconds, while the Bruins clocked a 44.509, giving the Frogs the final lane in the finals by just six-thousandths of a second.
"It was close, but having the worst lane in the finals is much better than watching it from the stands," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "Certainly the heavy rain was a factor today. I think if we run like we are capable of, we can be right in the thick of things in the finals."
Just after the completion of the women's 4x1 and with the men taking the track for their sprint relay prelims, lightening was spotted in the area, forcing a postponement of the day's activities at about 4:45 p.m. As the rains and lightening in the area increased, the decision to call off the day's events came shortly after 7 p.m. The Central Texas area was hit with between four and five inches of rain during the day. All the events from Wednesday will be rescheduled for later in the week, with the exact schedule to be determined by midnight Wednesday.
