DES MOINES, Iowa – Former TCU All-American Jessica Young advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 200-meter dash Saturday at Drake Stadium.

“On paper it probably doesn’t look great, but I feel I am having a good meet,” Young said. “I am glad I made it through to the next round. I did not feel my best today, but tomorrow is a new day.”

On a windy day at Drake Stadium, it was Young’s third heat of the 200-meter dash that posted, at the time, the only wind-legal result of the day. Young was able to rally in her heat, finishing fourth in her heat at 23.00. That put her second among the non-automatic qualifiers with one heat to go. However, that heat got one of the biggest assists of the day from the wind, as they came out of the turn with a + 5.2 m/s wind. The wait became a bit nervous as the first two non-automatic qualifiers from the heat were faster than young. In the send, she was able to hold on to the final qualifying slot to get another run on Sunday afternoon.

“I see getting to run with the wind as an advantage,” Young stated. “It is tough running into winds, but I will be ready tomorrow.”

A day after earning a spot in the World Championships in the men’s 100-meter dash, Charles Silmon elected to pull out of the 200-meter dash to rest a sore hamstring. Silmon still has a busy summer ahead as he will represent Team USA at the World University Games in July before going to the World Championships in August.

Young will take part in the semifinals of the women’s 200-meter dash tomorrow at 2:22 p.m. If she can make it into the final, that will be run at 4:20 p.m.
