FORT WORTH – The TCU track and field squad begins the 2013 indoor season this weekend at the Auburn Invitational, taking place at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.  Field events begin Saturday at 9 a.m. with the first events on the track starting at 11:30 a.m.

“We are coming off a long winter break,” TCU head coach Darryl Anderson said. “We are going to compete. The objective is to get in and get out healthy. We don’t want any injury setbacks this early in the season.”

The Horned Frogs will bring a young team to Alabama, with half the men’s squad slated to make their TCU debuts.

“We have a lot of young guys on this trip,” Anderson noted. On the men’s side we have half the group that are freshmen. It is going to be an experience to see how they function in this environment.”

As one of the feature events of the track and field weekend, the Auburn Invite is bringing in a loaded field. The men’s lineup is headlined by No. 11 Auburn and also features No. 16 Florida State, No. 20 Mississippi State and No. 23 Ole Miss. The women’s division features No. 1 Clemson, No. 11 UCF, No. 17 Georgia and No. 24 Auburn.

“There will be SEC and Pac-12 teams there,” Anderson stated. “It is going to be an exciting meet, and a chance to set the tone for the season. The team will know the level of competition they are up against if they want to be a TCU student-athlete.”

The meet will be a homecoming of sorts for TCU assistant coach Kevin Henderson. Henderson was a star hurdler at Auburn, winning six SEC titles and being named an All-American six times while competing for the Tigers.
