Flyin' Frogs Set For Last Chance Meet
Feb. 26, 2002
Several TCU Horned Frog runners will compete at the Cyclone National Track & Field Qualifier in Ames, Iowa on Friday, March 1 with a goal of securing a spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Among the Flyin' Frogs expected to compete on Friday are Michael Frater, Monica Twum and Chaunte Baldwin in the 60-meter dash, Jermaine Joseph and Steve Slowly in the 200, Herbert Mwangi in the 3000, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Kendall Pyant, Jason Morgan, Steve Slowly and Terrance McBryde.
The Frogs currently have a handful of runners provisionally qualified for the national indoor meet, which will be held in Fayetteville, Arkansas, March 8-9. Eliud Njubi has provisionally qualified in the 800, mile and 3000 meters, but most likely will compete in only the mile run at the NCAA meet. Njubi holds the sixth fastest time in the nation this spring at that distance. Freshman Cleavon Dillon posted the sixth best long jump in the nation this spring with a leap of 7.77 meters (25-06.00) in winning the Conference USA title last weekend. Conference USA champion triple jumper Brandal Lawrence has established a school record in the event with an NCAA provisional mark of 15.97 meters (52-04.75), the ninth best mark in the country this season. Demario Wesley owns the seventh fastest time in the 60-meter dash, but will most likely miss the NCAA Indoor Championships, due to a sore hip flexor. Frater will be looking to improve on his NCAA provisional time of 6.72 in the 60, a mark that leaves him tied for 30th in the event this spring.
On the women's side, Twum is the only TCU provisional qualifier. She is tied for the 10th fastest time in the 60-meter dash with a season-best mark of 7.34 seconds. She finished sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships a year ago with a time of 7.41.
Running events get underway at 2 p.m. Friday on the Iowa State campus.
