Silmon, Smith Named TCU Athletes of the Week

FORT WORTHCharles Silmon and Megan Smith were named TCU’s Athletes of the Week for their performances at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco over the weekend.

Silmon, running in his hometown of Waco, put up one a string of performances for the ages. He started his weekend on Saturday by earning the top qualifying spot in the 100-meter dash (10.20) and 200-meter dash (20.69). Then, over a three-hour stretch on Sunday, he earned three Big 12 Championships. He started off by running the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay that won in 39.61. His second title came in the 100-meter dash, leading a TCU 1-2 finish with Raymond Bozmans in a wind-aided time of 10.18. Silmon saved his best for last, winning the 200-meter dash in the best time of his career in an NCAA-leading time of 20.33. His time is also the sixth-fastest in the world in 2013. Silmon won the High Point Award for the men’s competition and earned an honorable mention from the USTFCCCA for the National Athlete of the Week.

Smith was the TCU women’s squad highest scoring individual with two top-five finishes in the shot put and the discus. In the shot put, Smith posted a best throw of 53-5 3/4 (16.30m) to finish in fourth place. It was Smith’s second-best performance of the season in the shot. In the discus, Smith added a fifth place finish with a best throw of 162-2 (49.43m).

Both Silmon and Smith will compete next for TCU at the NCAA West Preliminaries May 23-25 in Austin for a chance to compete at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. two weeks later.
