FORT WORTH - TCU football player Sam Carter and track and field athlete Veronica Jones were recently named the TCU Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)-Bob Lilly Athletes of the Year.
"Just as the FCA has had an impact on their lives, Sam and Veronica have had an impact on our organization," Chauncey Franks, TCU-FCA Life and Character Coach said.
Carter, a junior safety, has been effective in both stopping the run and the pass for the Horned Frogs in their debut Big 12 season. He finished the regular season ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 62, including 6.5 for loss and 3.0 sacks. He also had four interceptions and 14 pass defenses, both which rank in the top-five in the Big 12.
"Sam has been involved with the FCA Leadership Team over the past year," Franks noted. "Sam attends all of our weekly meetings and pre-game chapels with the football team."
Jones, a junior sprinter, was an All-American as part of TCU's 4x100-meter relay team that finished 15th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She also picked up a MWC title in the 4x100 and finished sixth at the conference championships in the 100-meter dash at the outdoor conference competition.
"Veronica has also been on the Leadership Team," Franks said. "She helps out with community and volunteer events, such as helping collect canned goods. Veronica is also very involved with our mentoring program. She has also helped work with the FCA Leadership Academy with the track and field team. We have weekly meetings with the student-athletes to help develop their leadership."
Carter and the TCU football team will be in action on Dec. 29 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl against Michigan State. Jones and the track and field team start the indoor season on Jan. 19 at the Auburn Invitational.
