Defensive Specialist

Rachel Shirley has played all four positions (middle blocker, setter, outside hitter and defensive specialist) during her collegiate career. Shirley?s tremendous work ethic and strength have allowed her to become a stronger competitor during her TCU career and learn the variety of playing positions. She serves well and will be expected to use that talent when called upon in the rotation. Expect Shirley to also provide leadership for the team.

2000 (Junior)
Shirley?s first season as a defensive specialist found her in action in 117 games (32 matches). She led the team in service aces ten times during the season. Shirley set a new personal best for digs with 14 against Montana State (Sept. 16) during the TCU Invitational. She had seven double-figure dig games during the season. Shirley finished her third season twelfth on both the career games played list (157) and single-season games played (117), and thirteenth in career digs per game (1.66). She provided the Frogs with a strong work ethic example and leadership during the season. She was one of five VolleyFrogs to receive WAC All-Academic honors.

1999 (Sophomore)
While her action in her freshman season was limited, her time on the floor in her second year was even more scarce. Learning a new position, Shirley played in only four matches and seven games. All of her action came early in the season as she saw time in only one game during conference play. Her first experience at setter came in a three-game loss to Northern Iowa on Sept. 3. She tallied a pair of assists in that match. Her most significant action came in TCU?s sweep of Chicago State on Sept. 11. Playing in two games, Shirley logged 14 assists, four aces, four digs and three kills.

1998 (Freshman)
Shirley appeared in 12 matches, starting six, and playing in 33 games. Shirley made her collegiate debut in the season opener in 1998. In the 3-1 win at North Texas on Sept. 1, Shirley played in all four games, logging five digs. Shirley played in the first six matches of the season. In the fifth match of that string, she led the team with seven digs in a three-game loss to New Mexico State on Sept. 6. In the next match, Shirley again led the team with nine digs in a three-game loss to Stephen F. Austin State on Sept. 11. She earned her first career start in a three-game sweep of Centenary on Sept. 18. Shirley earned a start in a three-game loss to Southwest Texas State on Sept. 26. She logged one dig in her final appearance of the 1998 season in a four game loss to Texas-Arlington on Sept. 29.

High School
Under head coach Diana Davis, Shirley earned four letters at Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, Mich. A superior student-athlete, Shirley was the valedictorian of her high school class with a 4.0 GPA. In 1995 and 1996, Shirley was named second team All-Conference. She was named third team All-State and Academic All-State in 1996. Played her club volleyball for Rob Buck at USA Michigan.

Rachel Christine Shirley was born on January 28, 1980. Shirley is an elementary education major.
