Tight Match Test Frogs' Endurance
Sept. 18, 2004
FORT WORTH, Texas - A marathon match between TCU and Appalachian State tested the endurance and luck of both teams today at the University Rec Center on the TCU campus. The Horned Frogs came out the victors in their second match of the TCU adidas Invitational, winning the two and a half hour match in five games, 30-27, 30-20, 26-30, 32-34, 15-12.
Senior Ellen Rehme stepped up to pull off a near 20-20, gathering 23 kills and 18 digs for 26.5 points in a timely performance this afternoon. The right-side hitter landed the final attack to end the match, hitting off a perfect set from junior Erin Ludeke.
Appalachian State gained the upper-hand early on in the first game, leading by as many as five before TCU's head coach Prentice Lewis called a timeout at 12-17. From there on out, the Purple and White mounted an attack that lasted clear through the second game. The first game jitters melted quickly away, and the Frogs took the first game, then the second, 30-27 and 30-20. Smart attacks on offense and solid back court defense overcame the Frogs' lack of net defense.
The third game escaped the Frogs entirely. A string of mishaps both on serve receptions and attack errors led to a seven-point run by the Mountaineers, who won 30-26. The fourth game stretched many nerves, as the Frogs revived to launch an impressive comeback at 22-27, pushing the Mountaineers to play to 34, where Appalachian State took over, 34-32. The Frogs continued to push the visiting team, winning the tie-breaker 15-11.
For the Mountaineers, Stephanie Panzer hit 14 kills with one error in 23 chances, for a .565 hitting percentage, while Samantha Giudici collected 18 kills. TCU's senior Dominika Szabo landed 17 kills and freshman Talaya Whitfield collected 21 digs.
At 7 p.m. CDT, in the marquee match, the Frogs take on No. 19 Santa Clara, who won earlier today against University of Arkansas-Little Rock in another three-game sweep, 30-19, 30-23, 30-22. The Broncos are now 2-0 thus far in the TCU adidas Invitational and 6-2 overall. The Horned Frogs lost last night in their home opener to University of Arkansas-Little Rock in a tough five-game battle. TCU is now 1-1 in the TCU adidas Invitational and 7-3 overall.
