Volleyball Holds Off SMU in Conference Opener
FORT WORTH, Texas The TCU volleyball team opened WAC conference play with a 3-1 win over SMU September 22 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The win snapped a four-game losing streak to SMU and improved TCUs overall record to 9-6.
Once again the Frogs leaped out to a 5-1 lead in game one before the Mustangs got on track. SMU came back to tie the score at 5-5 until the Frogs went on another scoring run this time going up 13-6. The Mustangs fought back with a 7-0 run of their own and once again tying the game at 13-13. SMUs offense committed two attack errors late that would give the Frogs two points and the victory in game one.
Game two began with TCU going up 5-1 before SMU rallied for seven straight points and its first lead in the match. TCU battled back in game two but would never regain the lead and eventually fall to the Mustangs 15-8.
Things started different in game three with SMU taking the early 5-1 lead and eventually stretching it to 10-4. The Frogs never gave up on game three, mounting an 11-3 run to take the game and gain the momentum.
After falling behind 5-1 in game four, TCU had seen enough. The Frogs went on a 14-3 scoring run to wrap up the match and take home their first conference win of the season.
"It is exciting to get the first conference win out of the way so early," said Coach Sandy Troudt. "I was happy with the spark Stephanie (Watson) gave us off the bench in games three and four, and I am very excited about how we never gave up after being down 10-4 in game three"
Amy Atamanczuk led the Frogs on offense with 18 kills on 46 attacks, while Lindsay Hayes recorded 50 assists. Jennifer Sebastian led the Frogs on defense with 8 total blocks while Marci King led with 15 digs.
TCU heads back on the road Tuesday September 26 to take on Southwest Texas State.
