Denton, Texas - The TCU men's and women's cross country teams opened their fall season Saturday, September 11, when they travelled to Denton to take part in the 27th annual North Texas Mean Green Opener. The TCU women placed third among five teams in a 5K race, while the Horned Frog men placed fourth among four squads in an 8K event.

SMU took four of the top five spots to capture the women's team title with 24 points, followed by Baylor (34), TCU (90), UNT (99) and UTA (121). The Baylor men posted the top four finishing times in the men's race to easily take the team title with 16 points. UNT was second with 54, followed by UTA (80) and TCU (92).

"This was a good opening meet for us," said first year coach Patrick Cunniff. "We may not have run as well as we hoped, but it gives us a starting point. Now we know how much work we need to do to get where we want to by the end of the season. It was especially good for our freshmen to get their first taste of a collegiate cross country meet. I was especially impressed today by freshman Matt Manly and Jonathan Bundren on the men's side and by Calandra Stewart and McKale Davis on the women's side," noted Cunniff. Manly was the top TCU male finisher, completing the 8K distance in 27:25 to place 13th overall. Stewart paced the women with an eighth place finish overall, running 18:36 for the 5,000 meters.

TCU senior standout Mary Kinyanjui, the defending Conference USA and South Central Regional champion, did not finish the race, pulling up with about a minute to go.

"Mary has been training very hard lately and I think she just ran out of gas," said Cunniff. "We'll have our trainers check to make sure she is fine, but I anticipate she'll be ready to go next week."

The Horned Frog harriers will be in action again next Friday when they travel to College Station to take part in the Texas A&M Invitational.
