The TCU women's team tied for second while the men's squad placed fourth in the cross country season opener on Saturday morning at the North Texas Opener. The men's 8K race and the women's 5K event were held at the North Texas Research Forest in Denton.

"I thought it was obvious this was our first meet of the season, while it was the second meet for most of the other schools competing," said TCU coach Derek Koonts. "We had several runners, both on the men's and women's side, who were competing in a collegiate meet for the first time and it showed. In fact, it was the first time several of our men competed at that distance. We had an ok meet overall, but I expect we'll be much better the next time out."

The women were paced by Mary Kinyanjui, the Conference USA outdoor champion at 5,000 meters, who placed seventh overall with a time of 18:24. Katrina Zielinski was just two seconds behind with an eighth place finish.

The men were led by freshman Alex Morris, who placed 24th overall. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 27:21. The TCU men's squad was composed of five freshmen and one sophomore.

The Frogs will be in action again next Saturday, when they travel to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational.
