DENTON, Texas – Agnes Kemboi continued her strong start to the 2012 cross country season, winning the women’s 5k at the Ken Garland Invitational Saturday morning. The senior crossed the line in a time of 17:02.72.
“Agnes was very strong today,” cross country head coach Liz Wort said. “She looked very comfortable out there.”
The Horned Frogs women featured two more in the top-10 with Tricia Terry finishing eighth (17:51.86) and freshman Ashley Eckhoff in ninth (18:03.84). The women’s team was second in the team standings behind Metroplex rivals SMU.
“Tricia and Ashley were solid,” Wort noted. “Ashley ran a PR by a minute. She is an exciting prospect for us.”
The men’s side was first in the team standings, edging out hosts North Texas with 26 points compared to the Mean Green’s 38. Preston Newsome was the leader for the men with a four-mile time of 20:26.67. Also in the top-10 for the men were Taylor Moult (fifth, 20:59.18), Kevin Case (sixth, 21:00.86), Jake Rossmango (seventh, 21:02.75) and Dave Emerson (10th, 21:41.96).
“We have made good strikes from the last meet,” Wort noted. “We had good effort through this hard training period.”
The competition will pick up for both TCU squads as the women’s team heads to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Sept. 28. The men go to Stillwater, Okla. for the Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday, Sept. 29.
