Women's Team Finishes Second in Denton
Sept. 17, 2016
DENTON, Texas -- The women’s cross country team continued their strong start to the 2016 season with a second-place team finish at the Ken Garland Invitational Saturday morning.
"I thought both teams took a step forward today in terms of actually racing," said coach Jennifer Fazioli. "Everyone was engaged throughout, and that's something that we have struggled with in the past."
Sophomore Anna Cozart led the Horned Frogs charge in the 5,000-meter run with an eighth-place time of 18:29.8. Cozart’s time marked a career best in the 5K for the San Antonio native, improving on last year’s performance by more than five seconds.
"I liked the aggressiveness on the course from my team captain Anna Cozart as well. She is not afraid to challenge herself."
"I was especially pleased with the impact of one of our freshmen, Lindsay Tomaini, who really put in the work over the summer and has moved up in every single workout to the point that she's now in my top group."
Saturday’s effort marked the best overall women’s team finish at the meet since the 2012 season.
On the men’s side, junior Matthew Brown paced the squad in the 4-mile race for the second-straight week, crossing the finish line in 21st at 21:04.4. Senior Ryan Spetnagel posted a career-best time in the event, clocking in at 21:43.0.
"Matt Brown is starting to return to the form that he showed early last season and each time out he gains more confidence in his fitness and racing ability."
The Frogs will travel to College Station next weekend for the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 24.
