Goertzen Places Third at Big 12 Championship
Oct. 29, 2016
LUBBOCK, Texas -- Sophomore Brenley Goertzen earned bronze at the 2016 Big 12 Cross Country Championship in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday.
"We set up an ultimate goal of top 10, and she blew that out of the water," said coach Jennifer Fazioli. "Brenley is so strong and focused right now."
Goertzen led the Horned Frogs and most of the field as she clocked in with a career-best time of 20:35.1 in the women's 6,000-meter race. Kansas' Sharon Lokedi won the event, finishing ahead of Goertzen by just 16.6 seconds. Goertzen's third-place finish marks the best for TCU in its five-year Big 12 history and the first All-Big 12 honor since Agnes Kemboi placed 12th in 2012.
Overall, the women's team finished eighth in the 6K, while the men's squad placed 10th in the 8K at the conference championship.
Behind Goertzen, who averaged a mile split of 5:31.1, was freshman Kirsten Johnston, who clocked in at 22:02.7 for 39th. Junior Nicole Hicks and sophomore Anna Cozart led the second wave for TCU, finishing with times of 22:32.5 and 22:37.4, respectively. Freshman Lindsay Tomaini crossed the finish line in 23:13.8, and freshman Kelly Fairchild logged a time of 23:57.3.
"The women continued to make strides and certainly it was an improvement over last year. We are definitely headed in the right direction and with a couple more additions - both due to injury and a new recruiting class - we will be right in the mix of teams at the upper level of this conference. It's very exciting to be building something special here."
The Frogs will return to the course on Friday, Nov. 11, for the NCAA Regional meet in Fayetteville, Ark.
