Goertzen Competes At NCAA Championships
Nov. 19, 2016
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- TCU’s Brenley Goertzen closed out her sophomore season by placing 108th at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.
Goertzen, the Big 12 bronze medalist, competed among the top 250 athletes in the country as she clocked a time of 20:52.2 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course.
“I was pleased with how Brenley ran,” TCU distance coach Jennifer Fazioli said. “She ran strong and competed well.”
Goertzen and the nation’s top distance runners battled through tough conditions, with temperatures fluctuating around 38 degrees and winds of 25 miles per hour. However, it did not seem to affect the Woodbury, Minn., native.
“Brenley is so singularly focused that not much upsets her or causes her to deviate from the race plan. That mental calmness will serve her well and becomes even more essential as she continues to compete at the highest levels”
Saturday’s performance capped an impressive sophomore season for Goertzen. In her final three races, she earned bronze at the Big 12 Championships, recorded the fourth fastest time in program history, garnered All-Conference and All-Region honors, and became the first Horned Frog to earn an NCAA bid since 2012.
Coach Fazioli looks for Goertzen to have continued success as she transitions into the indoor track and field season, which begins on Dec. 10, at the Reveille Invitational in College Station.
