Nov. 22, 2004
Mary Kinyanjui and Calandra Stewart represented the TCU Horned Frogs at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, held this morning at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Kinyanjui, a senior from Kiambu, Kenya, placed 77th overall with a time of 21:43, while Stewart, a sophomore from Houston, finished 144th, covering the 6K course in 22:19.
"It was a very competitive field and Mary simply did not have her best day," said TCU cross country coach Patrick Cunniff. "They had to run in pretty tough conditions, with a lot of standing water and mud after it had rained all night. Both Mary and Calandra competed hard, but it just wasn't our day."
Kim Smith from Providence was the individual champion, while Colorado took the women's team title.
The meet was the final event of Kinyanjui's collegiate career. The most decorated TCU female cross country athlete in school history, Kinyanjui was a two-time South Central Region champion and a two-time Conference USA champion and was recently named to the Conference USA All-Decade team.
